Mental health and learning difficulties-How to facilitate access

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The presentations of a mental health difficulty can be mistaken for the presentation of a specific learning difficulty. It is therefore vital to have a good understanding of the signs and symptoms of some specific learning difficulties, particularly when supporting young people with mental health difficulties. Records show that people with lower intellectual ability had higher rates of symptoms of common mental health problems (25%) compared to those with average (17.2%) or above-average (13.4%) intellectual functioning. In one study it was found that 54% of people with a learning disability have a mental health problem. Children with learning difficulties can develop anxiety disorders. Children with learning difficulties are four and a half times more likely to have a mental health problem than children without a learning difficulty.
This course will give some insight into common presentations of three specific learning difficulties including some helpful strategies.
